Conoce a Wilki Díaz Medina
Mi nombre es Wilki Díaz Medina y soy de Baní, República Dominicana. Me trasladé a Estados Unidos en enero de 2023. Encontré a BNB en internet y, con la ayuda de un amigo que me prestó una bicicleta, vine a comprar un casco para conocer la organización. Al explorar BNB, descubrí que tenían oportunidades para voluntarios, así que comencé a colaborar en el almacén. Después, me enteré de los programas para niños y conocí a Phil, quien me apoyó para conseguir el trabajo que tengo ahora: Mecánico de Reparación y Reacondicionamiento. ¡Empecé a trabajar en mayo!
Me encanta andar en bicicleta. Anteriormente tenía sobrepeso, pero empecé a montar bicicleta para hacer ejercicio. No me tomó mucho tiempo notar que en Santo Domingo había pocos mecánicos. Por eso, comencé a comprar piezas y herramientas, llevándolas a Baní para reparar las bicicletas de mis compañeros de ciclismo, quienes eventualmente se convirtieron en mis clientes.
Participé en el programa de Bike School con mi hijo, donde Emma fue nuestra facilitadora. Disfruté mucho trabajar con ella, ya que es muy buena y paciente. Mi hijo ganó su propia bicicleta gracias al programa. Quiero que él aprenda un oficio para enseñarle a ser independiente. En BNB, espero crecer como mecánico, aprender más y ofrecer un mejor servicio. Me interesa especialmente aprender a dar mantenimiento a las bicicletas eléctricas. También me gustaría ser parte de los grupos de recorridos de ciclismo que organiza BNB.
Meet Wilki Medina
My name is Wilki Diaz Medina and I am from Baní, Dominican Republic. I moved to the United States in January 2023. I found BNB online and, with the help of a friend who lent me a bike, I came to buy a helmet to learn about the organization. While exploring BNB, I discovered that they had volunteer opportunities, so I started helping out in the warehouse. Afterwards, I learned about the programs for children and met Phil, who supported me in getting the job I have now: Repair and Refurbish Mechanic. I started working in May!
I love riding my bike. I was previously overweight, but I started riding my bike for exercise. It didn't take me long to notice that there were few mechanics in Santo Domingo. So, I started buying parts and tools, bringing them to Baní to repair the bikes of my cycling buddies, who eventually became my clients.
I participated in the Bike School program with my son, where Emma was our facilitator. I really enjoyed working with her as she is very kind and patient. My son won his own bike thanks to the program. I want him to learn a trade to teach him to be independent. At BNB, I hope to grow as a mechanic, learn more, and offer better service. I am especially interested in learning how to maintain electric bikes. I would also like to be part of the cycling tour groups that BNB organizes.
