Bikes Not Bombs uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change to achieve economic mobility for Black and other marginalized people in Boston and the Global South.
RECLAIM
We reclaim discarded bikes, and also help community members reclaim their power, narratives, and potential.
EMPOWER
We believe in the power of young people to realize their potential, lead with confidence, and drive change. We empower youth through hands-on skills training, leadership opportunities, and pathways to economic mobility.
TRANSFORM
We transform futures through transportation access, environmental action, and social justice.
Youth Apprentice Spotlight: Jesus V.
Jesus joined Bikes Not Bombs as a Youth Apprentice in 2024.
“It was my first job, and I applied initially for the money. I soon learned that the work I’d be doing would be about more than a paycheck. The work is tied into serving the community.”
In the first few months, Jesus worked side-by-side with peers and mentors learning mechanics. He then used those skills to refurbish and prepare bikes for donation — giving new life to discarded bikes and new opportunities for the people who would receive them. Outside of the shop, Jesus challenged himself on long group rides — at the National Youth Bike Summit, the Bike-A-Thon, and weekly rides to scenic Boston destinations.
And along the way, Jesus grew into a leader.
“I learned that leadership is about helping each other. It’s about getting out there and speaking up. I had never been comfortable speaking publicly, and this job helped me grow out of my shell.”
Jesus, who loves to work with his hands, is currently in his first year of college at UMass Boston, studying electrical engineering. Thanks to his time at Bikes Not Bombs, he started this new chapter with practical skills and a newfound sense of comfort, confidence, and community.
