Bike Shop Has Reopened!

News released on:
Apr 7th, 2020

Dear BNB community,

On behalf of the hundreds of community members served by Bikes Not Bombs; thank you for your continued support in our efforts to use the bicycle as a vehicle for social change. Bikes Not Bombs is a critical part of our community’s transportation system and our goods and bike-repair services are essential for healthy and safe-distance transportation during the COVID-19 virus outbreak and public transit limitations.

These are confusing, anxiety-filled, and uncertain times for all of us. But this doesn't mean the important work of providing equitable access to transportation has stopped. Since the beginning of the year, our organization has collected and recycled over 500 bicycles, refurbished over 150 in our Bike Shop, and engaged 27 youth in our innovative youth programs so far. Our services just look a little different during this time of uneasiness and uncertainty. Please review our safety protocols and modified store operations listed below, including locked store doors to control customer access.

Here's what we're doing:

  • SHOP ONLINE: We now have an online store to sell bicycles, parts, accessories. Check it out! Don’t forget to visit our Merch store, and on eBay (search: bikes1984) as well!

  • CUSTOMER SERVICE: When you visit the Bikes Not Bombs store for curbside pickup or dropoff, we need to keep everyone safe. Doors to the Hub will remain locked to limit customer access during the COVID-19 outbreak. We have established drop off and pick up sites at our location using the fleet room and loading dock.

  • REPAIRS: For repair drop-offs, we ask that you follow the steps below and proceed to our main entrance where a shop staff member will assist you.

  • PICK UPS: For pick ups, we ask that you enter our loading dock area where one of team members will retrieve your order.

  • TEST RIDES: Until further notice, test rides are no longer available for bike sales. We can advise you in advance on bike-purchasing questions by chat, e-mail, or phone. Please check the Bikes Not Bombs homepage for current updates on our store pickup/drop off hours.

Here is a reminder of what actions we are taking to navigate the challenges presented by COVID-19:

  • We are providing regular updates to our staff and volunteers so they can keep themselves and their families safe;

  • Our staff will help us ensure a safe and healthy environment by following CDC recommendations re: hand washing, social distancing, and avoiding handshakes and person-to-person contact. Friendly waves and smiles are still okay!

  • Any person in our organization (volunteer or staff) who is mildly sick or interacts regularly with someone who is, will be sent home and/or asked to stay home;

  • We will be regularly sanitizing tools and commonly used surfaces at the store (door handles, registers and POS screens, retail and service work areas, etc.);

  • We will be sanitizing products throughout the store including new and used bikes, parts and accessories.

While our physical doors may be locked, your support means this important work can continue. These programmatic and operational changes have not been easy, and our staff has been incredible at adapting. We have had to get creative with our programs, and will continue to work towards our goal of effectively serving our communities here in Boston and with our partners overseas. Your support is essential during this time of uncertainty.

We know it's a lot to ask right now, but please support our mission by giving as you are able. Your community needs you now more than ever!
