Village Bicycle Project

International Programs Director David is in Ghana, visiting our partner organizations Ability Bikes Cooperative and Village Bicycle Project.  During his two week trip he is working closely with the staff of both organizations to provide technical assistance and improve our partnerships.

After taking a car to Lapaz, using the new highway that stretches across the north side of Accra, I grabbed another car to Lomnava, where Village Bicycle Project is based in Ghana. VBP has recently seen a lot of growth in staff, and has upgraded their facilities in recent years. I walked into the new VBP office, and we all gathered around the big tables. I met some new staff, and caught up with some original staff - Samson, who I've known for about 10 years.

We talked a lot about BNB, VBP, containers, tools, programming. We went deep into all aspects of our shared goals, and the operations that make up both sides of our partnership. VBP staff were very interested to know how BNB collects the bikes that we ship, and I was very interested to get feedback on what bikes and parts are most useful.

VBP has been BNB's first and longest running African partner for the past 13 years, and over this time VBP has made incredible impacts through their bicycle distribution at Village Workshops, their training of local mechanics and their distribution of bicycle-specific tools in every region of Ghana. VBP has been an important pillar supporting the bicycle sector in Ghana for many years, and after the meeting I had with VBP staff today, it is clear that they are committed to continue growing VBP and it's impacts for years to come.
