Bikes Not Bombs’ first annual Building Momentum Breakfast was held on Wednesday, April 27 at the William Devine Golf Clubhouse in Franklin Park. With over 130 people in attendance, the event was a smashing success! Guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast donated by our friends at Ula Café and heard from Bikes Not Bombs leaders and volunteers, such as Bob Thomas, a Jamaica Plain resident and devoted volunteer and donor, who MC'ed the event, and Executive Director Samantha Wechsler. Guests also heard inspiring stories from individuals who have been impacted by our work, such as BNB Youth Instructor, Zacorah Jackman.

Zacorah shared, “If I didn't have BNB, I would still have low expectations for myself and think that things don’t exist outside of the inner city… You just don't know what else is out there until you broaden your horizons. It's not about just going out of your neighborhood, it's about how you can go about things differently and that there's more than your local bus route or train route. There's a whole world, and because of BNB I actually believe that I can see it.”

While there was no obligation for guests to make a financial contribution, 80% of those in attendance were inspired to support BNB’s work using donated bicycles as a tool for self-empowerment and community transformation. Among them, twelve individuals became founding members of the “Wheels in Motion Team” by pledging at least $1,000 per year for the next five years. An additional $20,000 was raised thanks to the tremendous generosity of two individuals who made leadership gifts, and an anonymous donor was able to turn $30,000 into $60,000 by matching donations over $1,000, dollar for dollar, up to $30,000. We are incredibly pleased and honored to report that in total, the 2011 Building Momentum Breakfast raised over $130,000 in gifts and multi-year pledges.

We are deeply grateful to our event sponsor Ula Café, the Building Momentum Breakfast planning team, volunteers Ethan Silverstein, Ben Biros, Eliza Thomas, and Max Gordon, and all the BNB staff members and volunteers who helped make this event a success. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and a special thanks to the nineteen incredible individuals who stepped up as Table Captains and invited their friends, family, and colleagues to join us. Our 2011 Table Captains were: Lee Archung, Chuck Collins, Anne Favaloro, Amy Finnegan, Jon Hicks, Neil Leifer, Cristin Martineau, Kate Mombourquette, Daniel Moss, Elizabeth Murphy, Adam Myerson, Irina Rasputinus, Teresa Eliot Roberts, Rosie Rosen, Mark Smith, Bob Thomas, Scott Thomson, Mike Westerhaus, and David Wilcox.
