Oct 11th, 2010

On Sunday, 10/10/2010, Bikes Not Bombs volunteers loaded a shipment of over 500 donated bikes and shipped them to the Prisoners Support Organization in Uganda.

This event was also one of 7,347 of events in 188 countries worldwide as part of the 350.org Global Work Party! Bikes Not Bombs celebrates our solution to the climate crisis by providing affordable and environmentally sustainable mobility to ex-prisoners and people in Uganda. The 350 Campaign for climate justice has mobilized the largest single day of citizen action on any issue ever, and world leaders are listening. The Obama administration had a conference call with 350 campaign organizers and installed solar panels on the roof of the White House as an action in support of the 350 Campaign, at the same time that BNB was loading bikes and people were pitching in from 188 countries around the globe. Prisoners Support Organization
Kampala, Uganda

The Prisoners Support Organization (PSO), based in Uganda's capital city Kampala, provides rehabilitation services and advocacy for prisoners, ex-prisoners and their families. PSO will utilize the bicycles to provide increased mobility to ex-prisoners assisting them in social re-integration, to set-up a vocational training program for ex-prisoners in bicycle mechanics, and to help fund the ongoing operations of PSO through the sale of a portion of the bikes.
PSO's current programs:

  • Work to ensure that the fundamental human rights and dignity of prisoners are protected
  • Rehabilitate ex-prisoners through pre-release services, family re-unification, provision of bicycles and sewing machines as incentives as well as targeted vocational training assistance
  • Provide information and resources on issues affecting prisoners
  • Ensure prisoners’ access to healthcare - particularly those with HIV/AIDS, TB & Malaria
  • Provide education and welfare services to inmates and ex-offenders

Prisoners Support Organization is a nongovernmental organization that began its operations in 2005 as a volunteer ex-offenders support group. Today the organization supports over 5,000 prisoners annually and is one of Uganda’s largest prison based organizations.

(Note: Bikes Not Bombs is also in the project development stage for the "Amuru Health Worker Mobility Project" in Northern Uganda. We are seeking an intern to help fundraise and research for this project - see http://bikesnotbombs.org/uganda-intern.)
