SUMMARY:United in Pride: Unity in Community Ride [8/12/23]
DESCRIPTION:Unity in Community ride series presented by Bikes Not Bombs \nRide #3: Saturday\, August 12th\, 2023 \n \nTime: 11:00 AM social\, 11:30 AM program start \nRide distance: 11.5 miles (view official route on RideWithGPS) \nLocation (start/end point): Bikes Not Bombs Hub & Bike Shop (284 Amory St.) \nFree Bluebikes passes are available! Use the code UNITYRIDE3 in the Bluebikes mobile app for a free daily Adventure Pass. \n— \nThe architecture of a community goes far beyond buildings. As we recognized Pride Month in June\, we’re spotlighting some of the historical places in and around Boston that comprise this city’s rich and vibrant LGBTQ culture. From bars to churches\, from libraries to law firms\, the importance of physical space to marginalized groups has had an immense impact not only on the ways that Boston’s LGBTQ communities have organized\, but how they’ve built culture upon foundations of strong heritage. Unfortunately\, for a variety of reasons\, many of Boston’s most beloved and important historically queer spaces have been demolished\, abandoned\, or repurposed. Many of us\, even with connections to the LGBTQ communities in and around Boston\, are unaware of our city’s rich and vibrant history; in recognizing where these places stood and by educating others about their importance to American history\, we can trace the social geography of Boston’s LGBTQ heritage and perhaps become inspired to preserve other non-traditional yet culturally significant spaces. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Celebrating Boston's Black History: Unity in Community Ride [7/29/23]
DESCRIPTION:Unity in Community ride series presented by Bikes Not Bombs \n \nRide #4: Saturday\, July 29th\, 2023 \nTime: 11:00 AM social\, 11:30 AM program start \nRide distance: 8-10 miles (with stops along the Black Heritage Trail) \nLocation (start/end point): Bikes Not Bombs Hub & Bike Shop (284 Amory St.) \nFree Bluebikes passes will be available. Check back soon for more information. \n— \nPlease join us for our Unity in Community ride: Celebrating Boston’s Black History as we ride along The Black Heritage Trail®. \nThe Black Heritage Trail is a 1.6 mile route through the heart of Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood. Most sites along the trail remain private residences. However\, the final stops—the Abiel Smith School and the African Meeting House—are part of the Museum of African American History which is open to the public. The Black Heritage Trail showcases residences and community buildings associated with a Black community that thrived on\, and near\, the north slope of Beacon Hill before\, during\, and after the American Civil War. Throughout that time\, this community struggled and organized for equal rights and access to equal education. Community members championed the movement to abolish slavery and even housed freedom seekers on their journey along the Underground Railroad. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Building Momentum Breakfast [6/17/2023]
DESCRIPTION:Building Momentum Breakfast \nJune 17th\, 2023 \n \nPlease join Bikes Not Bombs at our annual Building Momentum Breakfast on June 17th at 9:30 AM\, followed by our program at 10 AM. In addition to celebrating the profound impact we have on youth\, our keynote speaker is the dynamic Charles T. Brown\, the founder and CEO of Equitable Cities LLC—an urban planning\, policy\, and research firm working at the intersection of transportation\, health\, and equity. Hear Charles discuss why Black Americans and other people of color are disproportionately victims of overly aggressive police enforcement and brutality while walking\, running\, riding bicycles\, taking public transit\, or while driving\, as he explores the ways in which people of color have their mobility arrested. Check out his most recent report titled: “Arrested Mobility”. Charles also hosts a podcast by the same name (Arrested Mobility). \nRSVP by emailing Director of Development Angela Phinney at angela@bikesnotbombs.org.

Dress warm as the warehouse does not have heating and work will be performed outside. Bring your own work gloves if you have them. Food and coffee will be provided for volunteers!  \nWho are we shipping the bikes to?: CESTA\, the El Salvadoran Center for Appropriate Technology\, is leading the struggle for environmental conservation\, sustainable transportation and community land management in El Salvador. CESTA combines an array of environmental and social programs with environmental and social justice activism\, positioning CESTA at the forefront of social change in El Salvador. \nCESTA’s programs include a bicycle mechanics training program for young people\, mangrove conservation that focuses on community land management\, disability rights advocacy\, traditional medicine research and education\, and environmental conflict mediation supporting communities that are in conflict with multinational companies over community land exploitation and environmental contamination. Bikes shipped to CESTA directly increase local access to high-quality bicycles creating access to affordable transportation to thousands of families each year\, directly impact the young people who develop skills and leadership repairing the bikes\, and directly support the broader environmental programs and activism of CESTA furthering large-scale social change in El Salvador. \nIf you have any questions or comments\, please reach out to Andrew Ahern\, Community Engagement Coordinator (Andrew@bikesnotbombs.org).

The bike project offers vocational training in terms of mechanical skills and business administration. The bikes themselves provide reliable\, affordable transportation for education and the revenue from bike sales helps Learn Work Develop carry out their mission of improving lives. Some of the services offered through the program include life skills development\, job creation\, advocacy in human and civil rights\, and support for women’s issues. Bikes Not Bombs has partnered with LWD since 2018. \nIf you have any questions or comments\, please reach out to Andrew Ahern\, Community Engagement Coordinator (Andrew@bikesnotbombs.org) and Santos Carrasquillo\, Director of Operations (Santos@bikesnotbombs.org).

Bike drives will be conducted rain or shine\, unless otherwise noted. Note that you can also bring your bike to Jamaica Plain any time! \nWe will provide you with a tax receipt for your donation\, if you like. Large drives will sometimes bring in over 200 bikes! These drives help us extend our network of bike collection beyond Jamaica Plain. If you have a bike to donate\, you can always bring it to Jamaica Plain\, but if you live further away\, then hopefully you’ll be able to find a bike drive that is closer. \n\n  \nOrganize your own bike drive!\n \n\nWant to help bring Bikes Not Bombs’ bike collection to your town? We’d love to have your help to organize a bike drive! \n\n  \nWhere do the bikes go?\n \n\nWe do a variety of very exciting things with your old bikes!
