VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN BIKE MECHANICS
Bikes Not Bombs’ Vocational Education Program (Voc Ed) is an 80-hour course for adults and youth (age 15 and older), offered at our Hub in Jamaica Plain. Voc Ed provides a unique job training opportunity for those who are motivated to learn bicycle repair and mechanics. During the class, skilled trainers take students through all of the systems of a bicycle and provide detailed explanations coupled with hands-on learning. Students who thrive in an experiential learning environment will benefit from the interactive structure of the Vocational Education Program as they build, troubleshoot, and test ride bicycles. The course runs in two parts:
- December 3 – December 18, 2011
- January 11 – February 26, 2012
Currently, Bikes Not Bombs offers Voc Ed once per year, and is able to accept up to 10 students. Priority is given to youth and adult applicants who are serious about becoming professional bike mechanics and who do not have access to other training programs. Graduates of the program have worked in Boston and Cambridge-based bike shops such as Bikes Not Bombs, Broadway Bicycle School, Ferris Wheels, Community Bike Shop, Cambridge Bikes and other bike related businesses.
The 3-month course costs $250, and scholarships are available based on need. Youth applicants under 18 are especially encouraged to apply for a scholarship.
Applications are due Friday, October 14th, 2011 by 5pm.
