1 Million Bikes for South Africa

Thanks to all who contributed to and worked on our May shipment to the Diepsloot Youth Bicycle Shop in South Africa! Some good and bad news - the project suffered a burglary, but some tools have been recovered by police. The Rockefeller Foundation, which has providing funding, had a positive visit to the project. There is the potential for some very big news for this project. The South African government recognizes bicycles as key in their country's development, and they've set out a new initiative, called Shova Kalula, which plans to distribute 1million bicycles over the next 10 years. Rural zones are targeted for majority impact, especially to transport school age children and teens to school. The Ministry of Transport is requesting that the Bikes Not Bombs Diepsloot project become a center to train more mechanics and trainers for assembly of these bikes. Important meetings are underway in South Africa and BNB will closely follow these developments to best provide support.
