WE NEED THE T! Call your legislators!
At the State House transportation is the hot topic and the General Court is moving very quickly on plans to consolidate statewide transportation leadership. There are a few problems with the current discussions, but one that looms over the rest; the MBTA's budget crisis is being ignored over complaints about the gas tax.
The T has been operating under massive debt brought on by the Big Dig, and as a result riders have seen 3 fare increases in the last 6 years. If our legislators fail to provide the T with an sufficient revenue source, the MBTA will be forced to combine a 25-30% cut in service with a 25-30% increase in fares - roughly double what they did in 2006.
Our worry is that less trains and buses that cost more will disproportionately affect the lives of low-income, transit dependent people while creating a greater incentive for others to choose cars over public transit for their needs. Our environment and our community cannot afford to have this happen, so we're asking you to call your legislators and talk to your friends about this issue today.
Go to www.wheredoivotema.com and find the contact information for your Representative and Senator. If you need help finding this information, contact Jeremy (617.522.0222; jeremy@bikesnotbombs.org). Also, if you are available to help spread the word we will be meeting at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday April 2nd in stations around the MBTA (including JP) to outreach to riders. Contact Jeremy if you are interested.
