2010 Fall Girls in Action Intern Description

Bikes Not Bombs seeks an intern for our Girls in Action (GIA) program. Girls in Action is an after school program for girls ages 12-18. The program curriculum focuses on bike mechanics, riding, healthy lifestyles, gender equity, and social justice. The GIA intern will assist the GIA coordinator in planning, implementing and assessing the program.

Potential Tasks

  • Recruitment through outreach to schools, organizations and individuals. Outreach will be conducted via phone, email and live presentations.
  • Researching activities and lessons focused on gender equity and social justice in order to build upon the GIA curriculum.
  • Assisting with general program administration.
  • Contacting partner organizations (health centers, farms, etc.) to arrange field trips.
  • Collaborating with the Youth Programs team to design and evaluate lessons.
  • Assisting the program coordinator during class time by running lessons and managing a group of up to 16 students.
  • Attending professional development sessions in order to gain more information and resources related to girls programming.
  • Accompanying group of youth, instructors and volunteers on daily rides and field trips.
  • Occasionally working one-on-one with girls during hands-on mechanics time.

Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Interest in positive youth development focused on gender equity and female empowerment.
  • Desire to work with youth in a hands-on, experience-based learning environment.
  • Experience working with adolescent and teen youth
  • Ability and openness to both teach and learn.
  • Mechanics experience a plus, but not required.
  • Ability and desire to ride a bike!
  • Preferred areas of study: Women’s studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Nutrition, or Exercise Science.

Additional Information

  • Internship is 15-30 hours per week for 12 weeks.
  • Internship target start date: Monday, September 27th.
  • Schedule is flexible, but intern must be available on Wednesdays from 2 pm to 7 pm for the duration of the program (between October 25th and December 17th ).
  • Internship will focus on outreach, planning and enrollment from September through mid-October and on program administration and implementation from mid-October through December.
  • This is an unpaid internship.
  • Position is open until filled.
